Umbrella Insurance

Did you know that most insurance policies may have liability gaps?

Your other insurance policies (e.g., auto, homeowners) have limits to liability coverage and leave out many common scenarios for which you may need liability insurance.  Fortunately, umbrella insurance offers a solution to these issues.

What is "umbrella insurance"?

Umbrella coverage is utter liability protection over and above the coverage afforded with normal coverage under common insurance policies. The term "umbrella" is used because it addresses legal claims from the complete insurance coverage under it, such as automobile, homeowners, watercraft, and so forth.  Basically, umbrella insurance is extra liability insurance, beyond the limits of your homeowners, auto, watercraft and other insurance policies.  It protects you from major claims and lawsuits by going into effect once your liability from other policies has been exhausted. Keystone Insurers Group is able to provide umbrella insurance that expands the monetary confines of your policies to provide additional coverage on bodily injury, property damage, certain types of lawsuits, and other personal liability issues.  Umbrella insurance also provides coverage for types of claims that are not included in your other policies, such as for false arrest, libel, and slander.

Why should I consider purchasing umbrella insurance?

You might think an umbrella insurance plan seems excessive and unnecessary.  However, consider these scenarios:

  • What might happen to your family and your property if you were sued for something that occurred at your residence where the liability costs on the claim significantly exceed the liability coverage defined by your homeowners policy?
  • If you were responsible for a major auto accident and your liability costs surpassed the restrictions on your car insurance coverage by hundreds of dollars, in what position might that leave you?

Even though these types of incidents may seem very unlikely, you simply can't be too vigilant. Fortunately, because these types of things do occur relatively infrequently, umbrella insurance is typically very affordable.  Policies can be purchased at a low cost to you and will provide you with sufficient liability such that you not should be troubled by any out-of-pocket liability expenditure in the future.
